Let me ask you a question. If you could do absolutely anything and there was no risk of failure, what would you do? The answer probably won’t surprise you all that much, but what it shows you is just how much you have allowed fear to hold you back. Fear causes you to bide your time, to wait, to wonder about what you should be doing with your life.
So, what is it? Failure isn’t an option anymore, what would you do?
Would you go bungee jumping? Skydiving? Surfing or scuba diving?
Would you travel the world or road trip across America?
Would you make more time for your family?
Would you quit your job and chase the career you always really wanted?
Would you start a business?
Would you go to college and get a degree?
If there was nothing standing in your way, what would you be doing? There’s a good chance it’s wildly different from what your life looks like right now.
Nothing Is As Bad As You Expect It To Be
Despite your fear of failure, more often than not you don’t actually fail when you put your hand to things. The worst case scenario is rarely the outcome that we experience. Yet, we still allow that fear to hold us back. It’s something that you need to overcome, just as you would any other obstacle, just one step at a time. With every step, your confidence grows and you start to truly believe in yourself.
When you were young and learning how to ride a bike you were afraid of falling off. So, you relied on your training wheels and probably for a bit longer than necessary. Yet, when those training wheels were removed, you still had that initial worry that you’d fall… but you didn’t (and even if you did, it probably wasn’t that bad, though it may have felt as if it was at the time).
To Succeed You First Must Try
We often lay blame on external circumstances. You can’t do what you want because the economy is too unpredictable right now. You can’t start a business because you don’t have enough spare time to get it up and running and you certainly can’t leave your job before it’s turning a profit.
You can’t make your idea a reality because it isn’t marketable enough. We are guilty of shifting the blame. Then we’re stuck living a life that we didn’t really sign up for, we’re left languishing in an unhappy existence where we’re merely treading water.
In that, we start to tell ourselves lies about how we’re too lazy to do better, we become careless and lose the faith. All because we’re too afraid to fail. We all reach a point where we are exhausted by life, but it’s what you do in those moments that can make all the difference. Do you continue with the exhaustion or are you prepared to make a change and overcome your fears?
So, ask yourself the question again – what would your day look like if you could do whatever you want without worrying about failure?
Would you act with courage?
Exercise your imagination?
Embrace your dreams?
Chase after your goals?
Redesign your life?
You wouldn’t be worried about failing, so… do it. Even if it’s just an experiment – take a risk and live an entire day without worrying about failure and see what can happen when you learn to let go and chase your dreams.
If you truly want something then start by envisioning it and learning what steps you need to take to chase it and capture it for yourself. You can do it, you can do anything…, and the only thing that’s stopping you is yourself.
